Get Wisdom

by Simon Whitton

7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.
9 She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor."
10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.
11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.

Proverbs 4:7-11 (NIV)

Wisdom was present at creation.  It is a theme that runs throughout the Bible and appears in the book of Revelation.  The whole book of Proverbs is dedicated to wisdom, where it is described as a quality of extreme value, something that we should greatly desire.

for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her
Proverbs 8:11 (NIV)

The book of Proverbs extensively elaborates on the many benefits of wisdom. We are told that wisdom calls out to us, offering us long life, health, prosperity, honour, righteousness, protection, guidance, patience, gracious speech, future hope, a good name, and many other rewards. Wisdom can actually give us most of the things we want in life.

We may wonder if such a precious quality is really attainable for those of us who weren't born with powers of reasoning or the ability to acquire knowledge. But wisdom is for all mankind, even those who are simple or foolish.

"To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.
You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding.

Proverbs 8:4-5 (NIV)

The true gift of wisdom allows us to gain understanding and a prudent life.  It teaches us what is right, just and fair and shows us how to live.  Surely the meaning of 'wisdom' is 'to see things from God's perspective'.  That's the type of insight that will bear much fruit in our lives.  But how do we get such heavenly insight?

1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:1-6 (NIV)

Wisdom is something that we should greatly value and hold in such high regard that we're willing to obtain it at any price. We must search for it, chase after it, cry out for it and embrace it whenever we can. Any amount of wisdom you acquire will result in great blessing in your life.

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.

Proverbs 3:13-14 (NIV)

Spend some time in prayer and cry out to the Lord for wisdom.  Believe and don't doubt that it is the Lord who gives wisdom and He gives generously.
