Set Free from the Snare

by Simon Whitton

A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast.
A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path.

Job 18:9-10 (NIV)

When I was a boy, my brothers and I would set snares to catch rabbits.  A snare is a simple but effective trap made from a loop of wire.  We would rub a little mud on the wire to hide any scent and make it almost invisible, and would set them along the more obvious rabbit trails.  Once caught in the noose, the more the animal struggled the tighter it would get.  You can't free yourself from a snare.

The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.
Proverbs 5:22 (NIV)

The scriptures describe sins as snares hidden along crooked paths, that we can stumble into and be trapped by as they get hold of our lives.   The sin that was once an indulgence becomes a habit or an addiction that chokes your life.   You may only become aware you've been caught when you struggle to free yourself without success.

We can become trapped in the habit of gossip, faultfinding and criticism.  Or a desire to get rich will deceitfully take your life down the wrong paths.   The 'fear of man' can choke your relationships; and sexual sins are described with all sorts of dangers.

22 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose
23 till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.
24 Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say.
25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths.

Proverbs 7:22-25 (NIV)

The fear of the Lord can keep us from many of these dangerous paths; but we all have left the straight way and have trespassed along crooked paths.  Every one of us has sinned and has been trapped by something.

The mistake we often make is we attempt to free ourselves from sin by our own effort and struggles, but like an animal in a snare this makes our situation even worse.  Just as we were not able to attain salvation by our own effort, but instead believed that Christ achieved it for us.  We cannot get free from the snare of sin by our own effort, but can believe that the Lord has released us.

Be sure of this:
The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.

Proverbs 11:21 (NIV)

We may have done wicked things, but those who have faith in the Lord are counted among the righteous.  You are not made righteous by your own effort, but by the blood of the Lamb.  We look to the Lord to make us righteous, and then as surely as He takes away all our sins, we can be sure that we will go free.

15 My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish.
18 Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.

Psalm 25:15-18 (NIV)

Spend some time in prayer, humble yourself before God and confess your sins. Thank God for Christ who died in your place, and gave you His righteousness setting you free.  Pray that you will live in freedom and be led by His Spirit.

Praise be to the LORD…
We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare;
the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD,

Psalm 124:6a,7-8a (NIV)
