Joseph: The Storehouses of God

by Simon Whitton

Joseph - the son of Jacob - is symbolic of Jesus in many ways.  Both were highly favored by their father, the envy of their brothers, despised and beaten by them.  They were each sold for silver, handed over to Gentiles, and falsely accused.  They started their 'ministries' at 30 years old, and both were raised to the right hand of the King.  Jesus was given 'all authority' that He might bring salvation to the world.

Then Jesus came to them and said,
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Matthew 28:18(NIV)

For you granted him authority over all people
that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

John 17:2

Joseph was also given absolute authority so he could implement his plan to save the people of the world from starvation and death, even though Egypt and most of the surrounding countries did not worship the God of Abraham.

41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt."
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh's presence and traveled throughout Egypt.
49 Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.
55 When all Egypt began to feel the famine, the people cried to Pharaoh for food. Then Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph and do what he tells you."
57 And all the countries came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe in all the world.

Genesis 41:41,46,49,55,57 (NIV)

Pharaoh had chosen Joseph to rule his kingdom.  Joseph accumulated such huge quantities of grain that he stopped keeping records, it was beyond measure.  When the people were in need they cried out to Pharaoh, who instructed them to “Go to Joseph and do what he tells you." All the countries went to him, and Joseph provided for them abundantly.

When we experience need, whether spiritual or physical, we can cry out to God.  We can go to Jesus who has been given all authority in Heaven and on Earth, and He uses it for our sake.  How much more can we expect to receive from Jesus who is far greater and more powerful than Joseph?  The spiritual storehouses of Heaven and the storerooms on Earth are at His disposal and they are full beyond measure.

We don't approach Jesus as a stranger or a foreigner, but as one of His brothers. Even though we may not have treated Him with respect, He will have compassion on us and will give us beyond what we ask, accepting no payment.

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,
to put each man's silver back in his sack,
and to give them provisions for their journey.

Genesis 42:25 (NIV)

Let's approach the Chosen One in prayer. Whatever your need, whatever the famine in your life, know that He has power and authority over all things and vast storehouses at His disposal, storehouses that have been filled for your use, to give you life.
