The Battle for Our Minds

by Simon Whitton

3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5(NIV)

What we choose to believe is of the utmost importance. You may or may not be aware of it, but there are many powerful forces constantly trying to persuade you to their way of thinking.  Reporters, educators, politicians, advertisers, religious leaders, characters on TV shows, radio hosts, movie and documentary directors, song writers, employers, friends and family, each tries to influence us to their way of thinking.

Some of this pressure is obvious but most of it is subtle, and we hate to admit that our beliefs are largely the result of these cultural forces over many years. But this is a glimpse of the spiritual war that is going on around us, a battle for our minds.

We join the battle as our minds sort through all the information and choose what to accept and believe. Once you accept something as truth, it can become a stronghold in your life, for God or for the enemy; the deeper your conviction, the more solid the stronghold. It's not just about issues, it's about truth.

Satan speaks accusations, words of discouragement, doubt, and fear, which we can choose to accept or deny.  When we accept lies, we give ground to the enemy who invades our minds, building strongholds wherever he can.  The more ground he controls, the more influence he has over our thoughts.

All the territory being fought over rightfully belongs to the Lord. He wants us to take captive every thought and make it obedient to Him, to the truth.  The Lord has given us weapons so that we can fight for Him, for the truth.  These include God's word, forgiveness, the blood of the Lamb, praise, faith, love, truth, confession, and prayer.  We can use them to demolish arguments and false beliefs that war against God and His truth.  These weapons 'have divine power to demolish strongholds'.

Most spiritual warfare is like a court of law where the arguments are over the truth.  The righteous Judge is on the side of truth, all we have to do is use the weapons at our disposal to make our case before Him.  Declare God's word, confess, plead the blood of the Lamb, praise Him, then stand firm in faith until He throws the accuser out and the stronghold of the enemy is demolished.

Spend some time in prayer, and ask the Lord to reveal strongholds of the enemy.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will teach you to effectively use divinely empowered weapons to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against God.
