In the Hand of the Sovereign Lord

by Simon Whitton

3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel.
4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then the word of the LORD came to me:
6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

Jeremiah 18:3-6 (NIV)

We may think we arrived at this place in life because of past decisions and influences.  We may even think we have control over our own life, but over and over again the scriptures declare that it is God who controls our lives.  We belong to the Lord, like clay belongs to the potter; and we are in His hands to be shaped as He sees fit.

18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19 One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?"
20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?  "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?'"

Romans 9:18-20 (NIV)

The Lord controls all of the circumstances and details of our lives.  The condition of our health, career, finances and relationships are all in God's hands, and He does with us exactly as He pleases.  He is the One who gives the world its seasons and crops to harvest; and He is the One who brings disasters upon the earth.  How much more does He carefully manage each of us and our lives.

so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know
there is none besides me.  I am the LORD, and there is no other.
I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the LORD, do all these things.

Isaiah 45:6-7(NIV)

Whatever situation you find yourself in, or see looming in the future, it's important to know that the Sovereign Lord is in control.  He uses hardship, like a potter uses sharp and rigid tools, to reshape you.  He uses times of refreshing, like water, to soften and form you.  Even the monotonous daily routine of life is like the turning of the potter's wheel, molding us into usefulness for His eternal purpose.

In light of the Lord's supreme control over our lives, we should cease struggling against Him and humble ourselves before Him.  Let's not be anxious, for He sees your whole life and knows exactly what He's doing.  Let's trust Him and release ourselves fully into the potter's skillful hand.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up
in due time.  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)

Spend some time in prayer and thank Him that He cares for you and is unfolding His purposes in your life.  Submit yourself and your circumstances to Him.  Pray that He will mold and shape you into the person that He wants you to be and that you will not be anxious but will trust in His skillful hand.
