As it Was in the Days of Noah

by Simon Whitton

36 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;
39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.  That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

Matthew 24:36-42 (NIV)

We know the Lord is coming back and that it will be sudden and unexpected.  He paints a picture where people are just going on with their busy lives.  Like in the days of Noah, the last days will be corrupt and full of violence, with people scoffing and oblivious that God's patience has reached full measure.

3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
4 They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."
5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

2 Peter 3:3-6 (NIV)

In Noah's day the rain was unexpected and abrupt; but the Lord had warned the righteous, and He separated them from the unrighteous.  Noah and his family were 'raised from the ground' and lifted up above the earth in the ark, while God poured out His wrath upon the wicked.

In the same way, in the last days, the Lord will suddenly take the righteous but the unrighteous will be left.  Those who belong to God will be 'caught up to meet the Lord in the air', raised up above the earth.  But the wicked will be left to face the wrath of God.

It was like this in the days of Lot, where the destruction of Sodom was not anticipated and so people went about their lives as if there was no God.  But the Lord warned the righteous, and then rescued Lot and his family, before fire rained down and destroyed those left behind.

28 "It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.
29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 "It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

Luke 17:27-30 (NIV)

We don't know when the Lord will return, but we have been warned that it will be like the days of Noah and Lot.  Knowing this, we should be careful to live our lives differently from the world around us.  We should be about our Master's business and live holy and godly lives.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?  You ought to live holy and godly lives
2 Peter 3:11(NIV)

Spend some time in prayer and pray that you would not live your life as if everything is going to go on as it always has.  Ask the Lord to give you an awareness of the brevity of life and the importance of being found among the righteous.  Pray for someone you know, that they would be spared the coming destruction.
