17 Though
the fig tree does not bud and there
are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields
produce
no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the
stalls,
18 yet
I
will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
19 The
Sovereign LORD is my strength; he
makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the
heights.
Hab
3:17-19a (NIV)
How useful is faith or what
is its value in times of plenty, in health, in times of blessing and
success? You
can’t grow a thriving life of faith when
everything is going your way. Faith
needs all kinds of trials, lack of provision, opposition, sickness,
heartache, fear
and uncertainty. This
is fertile ground
for faith, and as we trust the Lord during these times, we grow in our
faith, we
become strong.
It is not crops of food or
houses, bank accounts, secure jobs, or good investments that are our
strength. They only
produce physical strength and trust
in material assets; but faith in the Lord and dependence on Him
produces
spiritual strength.
With spiritual strength, the
Lord enables us ‘to go on the heights’. Not the heights of material
provision and
success, but the heights of a relationship with Him.
This is where we rejoice in our Lord and are
joyful despite circumstances, where our feet don’t stumble,
as we draw closer
to true provision, our salvation, an inheritance in heaven.
4b an
inheritance that can never perish,
spoil or fade-- kept in heaven for you,
5
who through faith are shielded by God's
power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in
the
last time.
6
In this you greatly rejoice, though now
for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of
trials.
7
These have come so that your faith-- of
greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--
may be
proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus
Christ is
revealed.
1
Pet 1:4b-7 (NIV)
We can rejoice that our
inheritance, our salvation is secure.
The
worst that can happen to us is death, and the goal of our faith is to
deliver
us from death, to save our soul.
Though he slay me, yet will I hope
in him
Job 13:15a (NIV)
