The Stronghold of the Lord

by Simon Whitton

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling-- even the LORD, who is my refuge--
10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

Psalm 91:1-2, 9-11

Having a 'safe room' installed in your house is becoming more popular in the United States. These are usually small rooms about the size of a walk-in closet. They are often made out of steel plate on a concrete foundation, designed to withstand F5 tornados or category 5 hurricanes, and can be purchased for a few thousand dollars. The idea is that you should have time to get yourself to this small room in the event of a dangerous storm. The storm may flatten the rest of your house, but you will be protected inside this reinforced safe room.

The world can certainly be a scary place at times, and as Christians, we often find ourselves in frightening storms. But the Lord has provided us with a safe place to run to. A secure stronghold that we can flee to in times of trouble, when we find ourselves in a desperate situation or the enemy comes at us like a flood. This stronghold is the Lord Himself.

The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Psalm 9:9 (NIV)

To enter this stronghold, we must run to Him alone. Abandon all other hope, let go of trusting in your own strength and wealth, and put yourself entirely in His hands. Leave all your worries and concerns, leave your baggage behind, and put your trust in Him.

The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at him, saying,
"Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold
but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!"
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever.

Psalm 52:6-8 (NIV)

The stronghold of the Lord is the dwelling place of a king, a secure refuge and place of shelter and peace for your soul. A mountain fortress built on a rock. You may observe battles raging beyond the walls, but they will not come near you 'for he will command his angels concerning you'.

The Lord's stronghold is a place of intimacy and abundant provision. You are not just in the king's presence, but you will actually meet with Him and worship Him here.

this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him.
Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.

Isaiah 33:16-17 (NIV)

Enter into the Lord's stronghold through prayer. Declare your trust in Him alone, and find security and peace in His presence. Pray for someone who is in the midst of a storm, and that the Lord would be their refuge.
