The Lord's Compassion

by Simon Whitton

8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you.
11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,
12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.
14 The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

Psalm 145:8-14 (NIV)

My wife Janine was standing second in line at a checkout counter of a grocery store. The cashier was talking to the woman in front telling her all of her problems. She was a single mum, her car was on its last legs, she was in debt and had to pay a court fine for something that wasn't her fault. The woman collected her bags and moved on; Janine now had tears in her eyes as she moved up to the cashier who continued to unload her concerns.

Janine asked the cashier her name, telling her that she would remember to pray for her. The cashier could see that this stranger genuinely cared, and they hugged before Janine left the store. Several months later when she was in the store again, the cashier came up behind her and hugged her, thanking her for caring during that difficult time.

It was the Lord who had arranged for my wife to stand in that checkout line at that time. Because He had been watching these events unfold in the cashier's life, He had seen her growing despair, and the Lord had compassion on her. He wanted to show her that somebody cared.

To encourage her during that dark hour the Lord reached out through Janine; her tears were genuine evidence of her compassion, but the source of all true compassion is the Lord Himself. Although none of the cashiers' problems were solved that day, it meant a lot to know that someone cared.

If you are in a dark place, know that it is God who made you and He has been watching you; and He has compassion for you in these difficult circumstances. He is a faithful and loving God who is drawn to those who are bowed down.

Spend some time in prayer. Praise God that He is a God who is gracious and rich in love. Know that God is the source of all compassion, and pray that He would display that love through you.
