Security in God's Love

by Simon Whitton

May your unfailing love be my comfort
Psalm 119:76a (NIV)

Much is spoken about God's love for us, and rightly so, but despite this being a well repeated theme, it is one of those concepts that can easily go out of focus within our souls.   For some it has never been clearly seen, understood or felt.

It is not so important that love be understood, though this is nice for theologians, or that it is seen, because that implies that although you have witnessed it and believe in it, you were not personally involved.  What's important is that it is experienced.

God wants us to know His love.  Though all too often, like so many biblical characters before us, God has to strip us of all other sources of security until His love is all we have left.

You may not appreciate a blanket until you are cold, lonely and exposed in the dark.  If you have ever slept outside at night without a tent, you know all the difference a sleeping bag or a blanket can make.  The true value of a blanket is felt when it becomes a source of warmth, protection, security and comfort.

God's love is the most exquisite of all blankets, bringing much comfort to those who discover it.  Unfortunately, the real value of God's love is discovered in the darkest hours of our lives.  But this is when God reveals the richness of the quality of the fabric of His love.  It is able to keep the darkest night at bay.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

Romans 8:35 (NIV)

Embrace God as your source of comfort, all else can be stripped from you, but not Him.  Draw near to Him right now and experience His love and the security and comfort He brings.  Pray that you will be able to share that blanket with another close by.
